Team History[edit]
In 1979 the Auburn Sunsets were renamed the Auburn Red Stars. A co-op team in Auburn, NY managed by Tom Kotchman, they finished last in the New York-Penn League at 22-45. They drew 37,459 fans, third-most in the 10-team league. The Auburn squad, outscored 449-304, had no All-Stars and was last in offense. Doug Frobel fielded only .804 at third base, but was an offensive leader at .288/~.364/.458 with 31 RBI in 35 games. They became the Auburn Americans in 1980.
The Red Stars received players from at least 7 different major league organizations, led by the Detroit Tigers (7 players) and Cleveland Indians (5). Twelve players on the roster never appeared in a major league chain.
