Team History

In 1980 the Auburn Red Stars changed their name to the Auburn Americans. A New York-Penn League club from Auburn, NY, the Americans operated as a co-op, getting at least seventeen players from the Cleveland Indians, including Jack Fimple and Kevin Malone. The team also received a couple players from the Los Angeles Dodgers, but had 24 players who never appeared in a major league organization. Managed by Bill Julio, they were last in the Western Division at 29-45 and drew the smallest crowds in the league, with 9,474 fans showing up. Robert Foster (3-5, 7 Sv, 2.21) was second in the NY-Penn in ERA and led with 17 wild pitches (in just 61 IP). The club produced no future big-league regulars and did not return the next year.
