In 1978 the former Auburn Phillies were renamed the Auburn Sunsets after becoming a co-op club. Managed by Dick Rockwell, the Sunsets were 32-40 in the New York-Penn League in their only season. They drew the most fans (47,111) and had no All-Stars. The Sunsets received a bit less than half the roster from major league organizations. Among the 8 players sent by the Philadelphia Phillies were Carmen Castillo, Alejandro Sanchez, and Dave Littlefield. The Cleveland Indians also sent 5 players. The next season they were renamed once more, becoming the Auburn Red Stars.
