Atwater Stadium

From BR Bullpen

Atwater Stadium was a ballpark located in Montreal, QC , on the city's West side (according to its idiosyncratic geographic rules) near the Lachine canal. It was a former lacrosse field that had rectangular dimensions dictated by the neighboring streets. When converted to baseball, it made for a very small right field area, and a huge left field, as the grandstand was tucked into one corner of the plot. It served as the home of the original Montreal Royals until it burned down in 1917 and the Royals left town.

The ballpark was never properly rebuilt, but a makeshift grandstand was installed to allow the field to still be used, and it served as the home of the second incarnation of the Royals, who played from 1922 to 1924. It was also used by other teams from the Eastern Canada League and Quebec-Ontario-Vermont League who did not have a proper home, such as the relocated Ottawa Senators for most of 1923 and the Outremont Canadiens in 1924.

The location was owned by a Catholic religious congregation which did not allow games to be played on Sundays. The teams would move to the east end of Montreal, to Shamrock Park, to play on those days. What was left of the ballpark was razed in then 1920s and its site became a public market, the "Atwater Market", which is still a going concern.
