Eastern Canada League
The Eastern Canada League was a class B minor league founded in 1922. The four-team league ran for two years. On July 29, 1922 Valleyfield moved to Cap-de-la-Madeleine. After being denied the use of Lansdowne Park, the Ottawa club played its home games in Montreal, at Atwater Stadium. In 1924, the league added two Vermont-based teams, becoming the Quebec-Ontario-Vermont League. The league's claim to fame is the presence of Charlie Culver, who played 6 games for the 1922 Montreal Royals, one of the few to break the color barrier between 1890 and 1945. Other notable alumni include Del Bissonette, Fred Frankhouse and Bill Hunnefield. The league used a split season in 1923, with Ottawa winning the first half, and Montreal the second. The best-of-fifteen playoff series went to the limit, with Montreal winning in a series that lasted 20 days.
