Biographical Information[edit]

Asa Lacy was selected 4th overall in the 2020 amateur draft, by the Kansas City Royals out of Texas A&M University. Coming into the draft, he was considered the top college pitcher available, as he had a typical pitcher's body and tools and was coming out of a major program, but he was the second pitcher taken in the draft, after Max Meyer, a less prototypical physical type, but one with electric stuff. Still, Lacy did not have to wait long to get the call, as he was the next player selected, making him the highest ever draftee from Texas A&M. The Royals were prepared to select someone else, expecting that he would no longer be available at #4, but did not hesitate when he appeared on the board: "There just aren’t that many [people] on this earth with his kind of talent," explained Assistant GM Lonnie Goldberg. It was Lacy's second time being drafted, as he had been a 31st round pick by the Cleveland Indians in the 2017 amateur draft.

He started off his college career by going 3-1, 2.75 pitching mainly as a reliever as a freshman in 2018. In 2019, he became a starter and was 8-4, 2.13 with 130 strikeouts in 88 2/3 innings. He then went 3-0, 0.75 in 4 starts, covering 24 innings, with a 46/8 K/W ratio when the coronavirus pandemic ended the season in 2020. He was a member of the USA College National Team in 2019. He was described as having four pitches, all of them above average. He has also drawn comparisons to both Aroldis Chapman and Clayton Kershaw as power lefthanders with great mechanics.
