Biographical Information

Lonnie Goldberg played in the minor leagues and Taiwan, then managed and scouted before moving to the front office.

He hit .359 as a junior at George Mason University in 1992, with 36 steals. Goldberg won All-Colonial Athletic Association honors at second base. He tied Dave Roberts and one other player for 17th in NCAA Division I in swipes. As a senior in 1993, Lonnie fell to .333 with 25 swipes and was again All-Conference. The Texas Rangers took him in the 27th round of the 1993 amateur draft. Assigned to the Erie Sailors, he batted .254/.329/.311 with 22 steals in 32 tries.

Goldberg hit .232/.286/.293 as a utility infielder for the 1994 Charleston RiverDogs, but fielded just .884 at shortstop, his main spot that year. In '95, he was again a utility man for Charleston (.218/.272/.276 in 100 G, 17 SB, 11 CS) as well as making 10 appearances with the Oklahoma City 89ers (7 for 30, 3 2B, HR, SB, 2 BB). Let loose by Texas, he batted .284 for the 1996 Bangor Blue Ox. He stole 49 bases, one shy of the Northeast League lead, and he won All-Star honors at second base.

Lonnie then signed with the Taiwan Major League's Taichung Agan. In 1997, he hit .288/.338/.408 with a TML-high 41 steals. He also had two putouts and one assist on a triple play, the first time that had happened in Taiwanese pro baseball history. He won the Best Ten nod as the top second baseman. In '98, he fell to .225/.295/.288 but still stole 45 bases (a TML record) in 53 tries. He hit .234/.306/.299 for the 1999 Agan to end his Taiwan career, stealing 24 bases in 28 attempts.

Goldberg returned to the USA in 2000 and batted .248 for the Yuma Bullfrogs. He also was 8 for 25 with 2 walks, 2 doubles and a homer in a brief stint with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox. That was his last year as a player. He managed the Yuma Bullfrogs to a 37-53 record in 2002.

From 2003-2007, Lonnie was with the Atlanta Braves, starting as an area scout and moving up to national scouting supervisor. In 2008, he joined the Kansas City Royals as Director of Baseball Operations. In 2011 he was promoted to scouting director of the Royals. He has signed Jeff Locke and Jamie Romak among others. As of 2020, he had moved up to Assistant General Manager with the Royals.
