Biographical information

Armando Moreno is a former minor league baseball second baseman who played from 1982 to 1991 in the Montreal Expos and Pittsburgh Pirates organizations, then spent 3 years in Italy. He began his professional career in 1982 with the Calgary Expos, hitting .338 with five home runs and 42 RBI in 66 games. He played for the Gastonia Expos in 1983, hitting .327 with eight home runs, 63 RBI and 17 stolen bases in 367 at-bats. He was ranked the club's #6 prospect by Baseball America going into 1984.

Although he hit 10 home runs with 55 RBI and 17 stolen bases for the Jacksonville Expos (with whom he'd play until 1988) in 1984, his batting average was only .230. It increased to .286 in 1985 and .311 in 1986, a year in which he hit 15 home runs and drove in 61 RBI. In 1987, Moreno hit .223 with eight home runs and 46 RBI and in 1988 he hit .270 with seven home runs and 57 RBI.

After spending five years at Double-A, Moreno worked his way onto a Triple-A roster in 1989, hitting .275 with nine home runs and 43 RBI in 316 at-bats with the Indianapolis Indians. He was signed as a free agent by the Pirates on January 22, 1990, and he spent that season with the AAA Buffalo Bisons. He hit .273 with 10 home runs and 30 RBI in 92 games. Moreno was called up to the Pirates in early August, but was sent back to Buffalo days later without having appeared in a game [1]. He played his final season in 1991, which he spent with the Bisons. He hit only .226 in 221 at-bats.

Moreno came to Italy in 1992 and hit .398/.532/.748 in Serie A2 with 41 runs and 33 walks in 36 games for Caserta. In '93, he batted .313/.459/.731 with 14 home runs, 35 RBI and 42 runs in 45 games for Caserta. Caserta moved up to Serie A1 in 1994 and Armando continued to star, hitting .438/.566/.791 with 42 runs and 45 RBI in 48 games.

Overall, Moreno hit .275 with 85 home runs and 459 RBI in 10 minor league seasons. He had a good eye at the plate, walking 665 times and striking out only 477 times.
