Team History

The Calgary Expos spent six seasons as a Montreal Expos affiliate in the Pioneer League. In their first season, 1979, they went 34-36 under the leadership of manager Bob Bailey. Third baseman David Perez and outfielder Fernando Marin (19 HR, one off the league lead) made the league's All-Star team, and Andres Galarraga played for the club. The next season, they fell to 23-46 with Steve Boros at the helm. However, led by manager Junior Miner, they rebounded in 1981, posting a 46-24 record and captured the Northern Division title. Third baseman Tom Fettig and outfielder Glen Stacheit tied for the league lead with 10 homers, and pitcher Barry Branam paced the circuit with 10 wins. However, the Butte Copper Kings defeated the Expos to capture the championship.

In 1982, Bob Reece took over as manager, and the Expos' record fell to 25-45. Despite that, second baseman Armando Romero and catcher Steven Ramler were All-Stars. Skipper Ed Creech oversaw an improvement the next season, as the team improved to 42-28 and won another Northern Division title. First baseman Tom Krupa hit 20 home runs and drove in 70 runs and was joined on the All-Star team by catcher Mike Rupp and outfielder Bill Moore. However, the club was once again defeated for the league championship, this time by the Billings Mustangs. Creech returned in 1984, but the Expos dropped to last place with a 28-42 record. One of the bright spots that year was the performance of pitcher John Dodd, who was the team's lone All-Star.
