Biographical Information[edit]

Anton Shirokiy has pitched for the Russian national team for a decade.

Shirokiy was only 19 years for the 1998 Baseball World Cup, in which he was 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in 7 innings. It was still better than the team average ERA of 10.40. In the 1999 European Championship, Shirokiy allowed only 2 runs (1 earned) in 7 innings but had no decisions.

Shirokiy was 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA in the 2001 European Championship, in which Russia won a Silver Medal, their best finish at a European Championship. He tossed 2 2/3 shutout innings versus the Dutch national team in relief in the Gold Medal game, a 2-0 loss.

In the 2001 Baseball World Cup, the Muscovite went 1-0 with a 7.20 ERA, again better than the team average (7.62). He got the first win ever for Russia in a Baseball World Cup, a relief victory in a 7-6 win over the Philippines after replacing Mariners minor leaguer Oleg Korneev.

Shirokiy was ineffective in the 2003 European Championship, with 20 hits, 6 walks and 15 runs in 10 innings as the worst Russian hurler, going 0-1. In the 2005 European Championship, he was 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA, beating Germany and Michael Otto and losing in relief to Great Britain and Geoff Freeborn. He also played a little third base, going 1 for 3. He had a 0-1, 3.72 record in the 2007 European Championship, shutting out the French national team for 3 innings and turning in a decent effort (4 runs, 8 hits in 6 2/3 IP) in a loss to a Spanish national team that featured former major leaguer Alejandro Freire among other Venezuelan, Cuban and American ringers.

Anton allowed 3 runs (1 earned) in 2 innings in the 2008 European Cup in Grosseto.
