Biographical Information

Angelo Dagres, one of only two major leaguers from the University of Rhode Island (as of September 2007), came up for eight games in September of 1955 with the Baltimore Orioles without the benefit of any minor league experience. He had just turned 21. Dagres hit .267 on a team that hit .240.

He played in the minor leagues from 1956 to 1962, in the Orioles and Cincinnati Reds organizations. In 1956, he played 145 games with the Vancouver Mounties of the Pacific Coast League, hitting .232 with 8 homers and 49 RBIs. He spent most of 1957 and all of 1958 with the Knoxville Smokies of the South Atlantic League, hitting .264 the first year, with 31 stolen bases, and .311 the next. That season, he hit 12 doubles, 14 triples and 12 homers in 134 games, scoring 86 runs. He followed that with another excellent season in 1959, with the Amarillo Gold Sox of the Texas League, where he hit .336/.408/.496, scored 79 runs and drove in 64. Still he did not get back to the Show, and his last few seasons in professional ball were not as impressive. In 1960, he hit .266 in 93 games with the Miami Marlins of the International League, then in 1961 fell to .230 in 88 games with the Jersey City Jerseys, the Reds' affiliate in the same circuit. He ended his career with 7 games with the Rochester Red Wings in 1962, during which he hit .111. Overall, he played 734 minor league games, hitting .277 with 47 homers and 263 RBIs.

His son, Todd Dagres, played baseball in college and then became a very successful venture capitalist and movie financier.
