Biographical Information[edit]
Infielder Andy Burns began his professional career in 2011. He was originally drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 25th round in 2008, one pick ahead of pitcher Josh Spence, but opted not to sign. He was then taken by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 11th round of the 2011 amateur draft, one pick ahead of pitcher Seth Maness, and signed with scout was Blake Crosby.
In his second pro campaign, he swiped 15 bases for the Lansing Lugnuts and the next year, 2013, he hit 15 home runs and stole 33 bases in 128 games between the Dunedin Blue Jays and New Hampshire Fisher Cats to earn Florida State League Mid-Season All-Star honors. For New Hampshire in 2014, he had 15 home runs, 32 doubles and 18 swipes. He reached Triple A for the first time in 2015. Andy's big league career, or at least its first act, was 10 games deep, with a total of 6 fruitless at bats and 2 runs scored. From 2017 to 2018, he played for the Lotte Giants of the KBO. He was back in the Jays' organization, playing in AAA, in 2019, then spent 2020 at their alternate training site.
He made a completely unexpected return to the big leagues in 2021, when a rash of injuries prompted the Los Angeles Dodgers to give the minor league veteran a shot. He collected his first career hit in his first game back, against the Texas Rangers on June 12th. It wasn't the prettiest of base hits - a dribbler towards the shortstop side of the diamond which Isiah Kiner-Falefa was unable to handle cleanly, but given how long he had had to work to obtain it, it was as welcome for Burns as a drive to the outfield gap. The game turned into a blowout, and he was called to the mound before it was over, allowing 2 runs but also notching a strikeout, opposing pitcher Josh Sborz.
