Biographical Information[edit]

Andrew Checketts has been a minor league pitcher and college coach.

Amateur Career[edit]

Checketts was named the Oregon High School Player of the Year in 1994. After one year at Florida, he came closer to home at OSU. In 1996, he was 6-2 with a save and a 3.47 ERA, third in the Pacific-10 Conference North Division in ERA. In 1997, he went 7-4 with a save and a 3.33 ERA, again third in the Pac-10 north in ERA and winning All-Conference honors. His senior season, he posted a 11-1, 3.77 record and was named the Pac-10 North Player of the Year. He had a 30-12 record in college. The Boston Red Sox took him in the 21st round of the 1998 amateur draft.

Professional Career[edit]

Andrew only pitched two games in the Boston chain, both with the 1998 GCL Red Sox. He struck out five in two shutout innings, but also allowed two hits, two walks and a hit batsmen. In 1999, he was 4-4 with a 6.11 ERA for the independent Tri-City Posse. That concluded his playing career.

Coaching Career[edit]

Checketts was pitching coach for Riverside Community College in 2001, helping the staff set a school record for ERA. He was at UC Riverside next, working with future major leaguer Dan Runzler. In September 2007, he was hired as pitching coach for the newly-revived University of Oregon team. He also was recruiting coordinator, with his 2008-2010 classes all being named among the top 25 in the nation. In 2011, Oregon hurler Tyler Anderson was a first-round draft pick; Scott McGough and Anderson pitched for Team USA's college edition in 2010.

Following the 2011 season, Checketts was hired to replace Bob Brontsema as head coach of the University of California, Santa Barbara.
