Biographical Information[edit]
Dan Runzler was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 9th round of the 2007 amateur draft. He was signed by scout Ray Krawczyk and began his pro career that summer.
In 2009, Runzler pitched for all four of the Giants' full-season minor league affiliates (the Augusta GreenJackets, San Jose Giants, Connecticut Defenders, and Fresno Grizzlies) and for the Giants, which is believed to be a first for the team.
After not playing in the major leagues from 2013 to 2016, Runzler returned to that level with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2017. In eight relief appearances, he had a 4.50 ERA. He played at Triple A and in independent ball in the interim. After his sojourn in Pittsburgh, Runzler spent the 2018 season with the Sugar Land Skeeters before splitting the 2019 season between the Boston Red Sox minor league system and the Skeeters once again.
After he completed his playing career, Runzler joined the Sirious Baseball training facility in Campbell, CA. It wasn't long before he took a leave of absence because the Milwaukee Milkmen of the American Association hired him in April 2021 to coach their pitchers.
Runzler moved to the San Francisco Giants organization as the pitching coach of the San Jose Giants in 2022 and stayed in that position through 2024. In 2023, Runzler’s San Jose staff led the California League in ERA for a third straight season (4.20), while ranking third in the league in strikeouts (9.7 per game) and third in saves (30).
Notable Achievements[edit]
- Won a World Series with the San Francisco Giants in 2010 (he did not play in the World Series)
