Biographical Information[edit]

Alfredo Mariscal won 159 games in the minor leagues.

Mariscal debuted in 1963, giving up 12 runs, 12 hits and 6 walks in 4 innings for the Puebla Parrots in an inauspicious debut in the Mexican League. He was 7-11 with a 4.90 ERA that year for San Luis Potosi in the lesser Mexican Center League. After not pitching in 1964, he was 11-8 with a 4.50 ERA for Puebla in '65. He had a 19-8, 4.80 record for Puebla in 1966. While he was just one win shy of Mexican League leader Julious Grant, he led the circuit in both runs allowed (114) and earned runs allowed (104). In 1967, Alfredo struggled at 8-17, 4.75. He did hit .263 at the plate. He tied Evelio Hernandez for the LMB lead in defeats.

At age 25, Mariscal improved slightly, going 7-12 with a 4.18 ERA. He hit .267 for Puebla in 1969 and went 14-11 with a 2.91 ERA. He was excellent with the 1970 Yucatan Lions at 21-7, 1.85 with 16 complete games in 28 starts. He led the league in both wins (one ahead of Juan Suby) and ERA (a healthy .60 ahead of runner-up Enrique Castillo) in a career year. He earned a brief look with the Los Angeles Dodgers' Spokane Indians affiliate, going 2-0 with a 4.20 ERA in six games and going 2 for 4 with a walk at the plate.

The left-hander spent most of 1971 in the US with the Chicago White Sox' Tucson Toros farm team, winning one, losing one, saving two and having a 5.16 ERA in 26 games. At the plate, he went 5 for 23 with two walks and two triples. He also allowed three runs in his lone appearance in Mexico that year, a complete game loss for the Torreon Cotton Dealers. Back with Torreon for all of 1972, the veteran was 6-10 with a 4.00 ERA. Moving to the Saltillo Saraperos, he was far better in 1973 at 13-5, 3.08 with a save. He had his second-best season in '74, going 16-6 with a save and a 2.27 ERA, while walking just 36 (6 of those intentionally) in 202 1/3 innings. He finished 6th in ERA.

In 1975, the Cananea native was 1-2 with a 3.00 ERA in five games for Saltillo. He split '76 between Saltillo and the Poza Rica Oilers, going 3-8 with a save and a 3.90 ERA. Back with Saltillo for all of 1977, he had a 15-8, 3.26 record. With the Tampico Lightermen in '78, he was 10-11 with a 3.42 ERA. He faded from there, going 3-10 with a 4.05 ERA for two clubs in 1979, 2-2 with four saves and a 5.40 ERA for Tabasco in 1980 and giving up 3 runs and 7 hits in two innings for Tabasco in '81.

Mariscal received 285 votes from the Veterans Committee in the 2011 Salón de la Fama balloting, behind only Jimmie Collins. He only had 181 votes in 2013 but that tied Suby atop the veterans ballot to win induction.

Overall, Alfredo was 149-126 with a 3.60 ERA in 460 games in the Mexican League. He completed 114 games.
