Biographical Information[edit]
Umpire Alex Tosi worked his first major league game during the 2019 season. He had a lot of minor league experience at the time, having first worked in the New York-Penn League in 2011, and making his way to the AAA International League in 2016. He had been a pitcher in college, at Illinois Wesleyan University. He then began working on a postgraduate degree in sports management at Illinois State University, but not finding the program to his liking, decided to quit in order to attend the Harry Wendelstedt umpiring school in Florida.
He became a permanent member of the major league umpiring crew in 2023. On May 16, 2024, he was the home plate umpire when the rule on mound visits had to be enforced for a rare time: Tampa Bay Rays pitching coach Kyle Snyder began to make his way to the mound to speak to closer Jason Adam with two outs in the 9th, not realizing that the Rays had used up their last allotted visit earlier in the inning. Tosi properly stepped in and prevented the visit from taking place, but he did not then order Tampa to replace its pitcher, as he should have done under the rule. Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora intervened to demand that that part of the rule be enforced as well, at which point Tosi consulted with crew chief Phil Cuzzi and the two other umpires, after which a rule check was made with MLB Headquarters in New York. This gave Tampa enough time to warm up another reliever, Erasmo Ramirez, before it was confirmed that, indeed, Adam had to go. Ramirez then recorded the final out to end the game.
