Biographical Information[edit]
Alex Skinner was in two major league games as player, but eight as an umpire. He played one game each for the Baltimore Monumentals and the Chicago/Pittsburgh entries in the fledgling Union Association in 1884, appearing in the outfield both times. Then, in 1886, he umpired one game in the American Association and seven in the National League.
He was referred to sometimes as S.A. Skinner or Stephen Skinner, in addition to Al, Alex or Alexander, but Alex was most common. He is listed in Baltimore, MD city directories under different forms of his name. He married one Kate DeHaven in 1884 and joined the Navy in 1887. This information helped to correct some wrong information that had long been listed in records concerning him, as the vital statistics of another person had been appended to his name.
