Biographical Information[edit]
Alex Nahigian coached college baseball for over 30 years.
Nahigian starred in football and baseball in high school, but a heart condition ended his college football career. [1] He did play baseball for four years at Holy Cross. He played for (presumably semi-pro) Pawtucket Slaters in 1942-1945. Nahigian was hired as head football and baseball coach at East Senior High School in Pawtucket, RI in 1944. [2] He coached East for 15 years [3].
Nahigian played minor league ball for the Pawtucket Slaters in 1946-1947, Portland Pilots in 1947 and Providence Grays in 1948. In June 1949, he was hired as assistant football coach at Brown University [4] a job still held through 1972 [5]
Nahigian was hired as head coach at Providence College for 1960 and stayed through 1978. He was then head coach at Harvard University from 1979 to 1990. He was inducted into the Providence Hall of Fame in 2008.
Nahigian also had a long association with the collegiate summer Rutland Royals, playing for them in the late 30s and managing them in the late 40s.
