After spending 1947 known as the Portland Gulls, the Portland, Maine team in the New England League became known as the Portland Pilots in 1948. In their first year, the team went 45-80 and finished in seventh place. The next year, the club improved to 78-47 and third place, and in 1949, they finished in third again with a 66-57 record. However, the league and the Pilots ceased operations that year.
