Biographical Information[edit]

Infielder Alex Fernandez Jr. is the son of pitcher Alex Fernandez. He first made the news when as a pitcher for the University of Miami on March 6, 2012, he gave up the first home run ever hit at Marlins Park, to Hanley Ramirez in an exhibition game between the Miami Marlins and the university. After two years at Miami, he transferred to Nova Southeastern University.

He was a two-way player in college, and when he was drafted by the same Marlins in the 25th round of the 2015 amateur draft, it was as an infielder. He had earlier been drafted out of high school in the 46th round in 2011, by the Detroit Tigers, but had preferred to go on to college at the time. He began his professional career with the GCL Marlins and received a couple of promotions his first year, also playing some games with the Batavia Muckdogs of the New York-Penn League and the Jupiter Hammerheads of the Florida State League. In 51 games, he hit .271/.359/.398, with 9 doubles, 4 homers and 16 RBIs. On defense, he split his time between second and third base. In 2016, he played 21 games between Batavia and the Greensboro Grasshoppers of the South Atlantic League, going 14 for 75 (.187) and was released. He was picked up by the Tigers, who assigned him to the GCL Tigers West, where he completed the season by hitting .238 in 30 games. He was then released by the Tigers as well and played one more season as a pro in 2017, with the Washington Wild Things of the independent Frontier League, where he hit .168 in 33 games.
