Biographical Information

Alex Derhak played for five seasons in the minors then in Europe.

Derhak hit .278/.338/.331 as a freshman at UNC Charlotte, then fell to .264/.309/.297 as a sophomore. As a junior in 2002, he hit .280/.351/.439 and he followed with a .288/.358/.452 line as a senior. Turning pro, he put up a .261/.303/.286 line for the 2004 Florence Freedom. He split 2005 between Florence (.260/.275/.360 in 16 G) and the Mid-Missouri Mavericks (.302/.338/.434 in 49 G), making 19 passed balls in 51 games at catcher. He bounced around even more in 2006, appearing in a total of 36 games between the Gateway Grizzlies (6 for 43, 2 2B, 5 BB), Amarillo Dillas (3 for 24, 2B, 4 BB) and Lancaster Barnstormers. He was somewhat more productive in 2007 with the Schaumburg Flyers (.236/.299/.344) and Chillicothe Paints (.226/.369/.340). He ended his independent league career with the 2008 El Paso Diablos, hitting .288/.337/.406. For El Paso, he was used primarily as an outfielder and also played 2B and 3B in addition to his usual catcher. In five seasons in the independent leagues, his career line was .257/.309/.349 in 318 games.

Signing with Technika Brno in the Czech Republic for 2010, Derhak hit .265/.341/.388. He tied for second in the Extraliga with 12 doubles, two behind leader Wayne Ough. That winter, he played in the revived Australian Baseball League but was just 2 for 18 with two walks as a third-string catcher for the Adelaide Bite. For 2011, he moved from one Brno-based club to another, joining Draci Brno. In the 2011 European Cup, he scored the winner against former Reds farmhand Arshwin Asjes as Draci Brno upset DOOR Neptunus of the Netherlands.
