Biographical Information[edit]
Catcher Alex Burg played baseball at Mount Rainier High School and was named Washington's Player-of-the-Year as a senior. Burg attended Clemson University for two years before transferring to Washington State University for his final two seasons. After his senior year, the San Francisco Giants drafted Burg in the 24th round of the 2009 Amateur Draft. From 2010-2018 Burg played eight seasons in the minor leagues with various organizations. In 2017 he played for the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League. Burg also played winter ball in Australia and Venezuela for the Perth Heat and Tiburones de La Guaira, respectively. For the minor league portion of his career, Burg hit .260/.344/.441 while playing multiple positions defensively.
The Texas Rangers hired Burg in 2019 for a new position, Coordinator of Run Production. He stayed in this role for three years. Burg should not be confused with Brett Hayes who was the Coordinator of Run Prevention for the Rangers in this same time period. In 2022 Burg returned to the Giants organization as a bullpen catcher for the major league team. The Giants promoted Burg to major league catching coach in 2024 where he experienced a scary moment. Burg was catching closer Camilo Doval when the lights went out just as Doval released his final warm-up pitch.[1] Burg remained with the Giants in the same role in 2025.
