Pitcher Al Dawson spent four years in the minors, with a composite record of 36-21.

Dawson was picked in the third round of the 1969 amateur draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers; nowadays, a top-60 pick might well go in the first round.

He led the Northwest League with 10 wins and a .909 winning percentage in his first year of pro ball with the 1969 Rogue Valley Dodgers. He tied for third with 79 strikeouts and was second in ERA (2.56), trailing Craig Scramuzzo. He failed to make the league All-star team as Don Stanhouse and Ted Gilje were chosen as the top pitchers.

Dawson won a pitching Triple Crown as he led the California League in 1970 with 17 wins, 244 strikeouts and a 2.47 ERA for the Bakersfield Dodgers. He only allowed 134 hits in 182 innings but walked 100. Don Hood was second in ERA, .41 behind Al. Dawson made the All-Star team that year.

Dawson made it to AAA by 1971, but never made the majors. He was 4-7 with a 6.00 ERA for the 1971 Spokane Indians and 0-1, 4.05 for Bakersfield. He split 1972 between Bakersfield (2-1, 2.83) and the El Paso Dodgers (3-5, 4.71).
