Biographical Information[edit]

Akio Ishii played in Nippon Pro Baseball for 10 years.

Ishii won a MVP and 3 Best Nine awards in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area University Baseball League, and he led Tokai University to the finale of the 1977 All-Japan University Baseball Championship Series. He was drafted by the Chunichi Dragons in the 3rd round of the 1977 NPB draft, and he was 6-for-41 in 1978. He went 10-for-41 in 1979, and he hit .217/.313/.413 in 88 games in 1980. Ishii then had a .207/.347/.306 batting line in 1981, and he was 9-for-45 in 1982. He only played 18 games with the big club in 1983, and he struggled again in 1984 as his batting line was .184/.295/.289.

When Ken Macha and Yasunori Oshima were injured in 1985, Ishii got some chances and he hit .316/.452/.489 in 75 games. However, his batting line fell to .225/.338/.333 in 1986, and he went 11-for-54 in 1987. He announced his retirement after the 1987 season, and he was the batting coach for the Dragons in 1990 and for their minor league team from 1988 to 1989, from 1991 to 1994, from 1999 to 2004 and from 2018 to 2019. Ishii was also a scout for Chunichi from 1995 to 1998 and a batting coach for the Yomiuri Giants in 2023.

Overall, Ishii hit .226/.334/.347 with 167 hits and 19 homers in 10 seasons in NPB.
