Biographical Information[edit]
Adolfo Reina peaked at AAA and has played for the Panamanian national team.
Reina was signed by Detroit Tigers scout Ray Webster in January 2008. [1] He hit .260/.300/.389 for the 2008 VSL Tigers while playing catcher, first base, second base and third base. He tied for 9th in the Venezuelan Summer League with five home runs. Coming stateside the next year, he hit .171/.277/.357 as a backup catcher for the GCL Tigers. He missed 2010 with reactive arthritis. [2] In 2011, he played for the GCL Tigers (.211/.258/.422 in 28 G), fielding .989 at catcher (which he split with Wes Thigpen) and Connecticut Tigers (0 for 8, BB).
He spent most of 2012 with the Lakeland Flying Tigers, backing up James McCann and Curt Casali behind the dish; he produced at a .298/.323/.421 clip in 39 games. He also was 1 for 4 for the Toledo Mud Hens. In '13, he was with Lakeland (.179/.220/.231 in 12 G) and the West Michigan Whitecaps (.196/.245/.293 in 55 G, backing up Bennett Pickar at catcher). The Tucson Padres took him in the AAA phase of the 2013 Rule V Draft. [3] Assigned to the Fort Wayne Tincaps, he hit .243/.276/.407 and went deep 8 times in 189 at-bats. In 2015, he split time between the Lake Elsinore Storm (.260/.325/.327 in 30 G) and San Antonio Missions (.205/.299/.248 in 37 G). In 329 minor league games, he had batted .231/.283/.354 with 30 home runs in 1,134 AB. He fielded .984 at catcher and threw out 32% of those who tried to steal.
The Veraguas native then played for Panama in the 2017 Bolivarian Games, going 2 for 11. [4] In the Gold Medal Game, he hit 7th and went 1 for 4 with a run in a 6-4 loss to host Colombia. [5] In the 2017 Central American Games the next month, he produced at a .273/.463/.455 clip in the round-robin phase, including a 3-RBI game against El Salvador. Hitting 6th in the Gold Medal Game, he went 0 for 3 in a 3-1 loss to host Nicaragua. [6]
