Abel Madera is the brother of Lázaro Madera and Yosvani Madera.
Madera led the 1997 Copa de la Revolución with a 0.70 ERA for Pinar del Río. That earned him a spot on the Cuban national team for the only time.
In the 1997 World Port Tournament, the right-handed hurler was Cuba's only pitcher with a 0.00 ERA, working six shutout innings. Joining his brother Yosvani, a catcher, for the 1997 Intercontinental Cup, Abel went 2-0 with one hit and 7 strikeouts in six innings as Cuba's ace again. He tied Akio Shimizu, Pedro Luis Lazo, Koji Uehara and José Contreras for the Cup lead in victories as Cuba took home the Silver Medal.
Madera was 33-17 with 11 saves in 8 seasons in Cuba. He had a 3.43 ERA for his career.
