1993 World Junior Championship

The 1993 World Junior Championship was the 13th World Junior Championship. For the second time in event history, the Medal winners were an exact repeat of the prior year. The Championship was played from August 13 through August 22, 1993 in Windsor, ON.

The Cuban team overcame a 5-2 round-robin phase to top Canada 9-0 in the semifinals and the previously unbeaten US team 5-1 in the finale. Cuba rode the arm of Liván Hernández, who had won the Gold Medal game in 1992 as well. Hernández struck out 17 in a 5-hit complete game victory, shutting down a US team with several future big-league hitters. He was one of two Cuban players on the All-Tournament Team. He had gone 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA in the round-robin phase, striking out 21 and allowing 11 hits in 17 innings. The other All-Tournament player for Cuba was 3B Luis Valle.

The US team had a couple All-Tournament players, 1B Danny Peoples (.461 in the round-robin, the best average of the phase) and OF Chad Green (.378, the leader with 15 runs and 7 steals). The US had the best offense, scoring 68 runs in 8 straight wins before being shut down by Hernández. Paul Konerko (.387, 11 RBI) went on to the best career from the squad.

Taiwan finished third. They were 4-3 with a 44-43 run differential in the round-robin but nearly beat the US in the semifinals (3-2) then routed Canada 14-2 in the Bronze Medal game. Catcher Hung-Yuan Lin (.458, 3 HR) led in home runs and won MVP honors. Joining him on the All-Tournament Team was 2B Chao-Shin Yang. Ming-Chieh Hsu (2-2, 1.71 in the round-robin) walked only 1 in 21 innings.

Canada had been outscored 81-42 yet finished 4th. Jordan Zimmerman was 0-1 with a 3.97 ERA. SS Eric Boisjoly made the All-Tourney Team.

Australia (3-4) finished 5th. OF Travis Lost (.400) represented them on the All-Tournament Team.

Tying for 5th were the Netherlands (2-5) and Brazil (2-5). The Netherlands had All-Tourney P Christiaen Ruggenberg while Brazil had All-Tourney OF Miguel Luiz Batista.

Mexico (1-6) was the only team without an all-Tournament Player. Their pitching staff only gave up 43 runs in the round-robin, tying Taiwan for third behind Cuba and the US, but a pathetic offense (24 runs) doomed them. Jesus N. Lopez (0-2, 0.87) had the best ERA in the round-robin phase but couldn't win a game.
