1939 East-West Game - Second Game (Negro League)
In 1938, a second game was promoted as part of the East-West rivalry, but was never taken as legitimate. However, this year the East-West game was officially a two-game series, one game in the wast and one in the east, as would be true in four of the next nine seasons.
After the West had won the first 1939 East-West Game with a late rally, the East ran away with the second match-up, which took place on August 27 at Yankee Stadium.
The West scored first, when Neil Robinson drove in John Lyles in the first against Bill Byrd. The East tied it in the bottom of the inning when Willie Wells was hit by a pitch, advanced on an Ed Stone single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Josh Gibson. In the second, the East opened the floodgatges. Buck Leonard walked, Vic Harris singled and Sammy Hughes walked. With one out, Bill Wright singled in Leonard and Hughes. Slim Johnson relieved Byrd but Wells smacked a 2-run double. In the 5th, Stone singled and later came around on an out by Pat Patterson.
In the 6th, the West made it a 6-2 on singles by Robinson and Alec Radcliffe and a sac fly by Turkey Stearnes. The East put on more damage in the 8th when Wright doubled, Wells reached on a fielder's choice, Ted Strong walked and Gibson hit a 400' 3-run triple. Leonard singled him in. Stone finished 3-for-5 with 2 runs and a walk while Gibson reached base three times and drove home four. Wright had two runs and two RBI.
