History, Comments, Contributions[edit]
The 1924 Brooklyn Robins were the oldest team in the National League and were not expected to contend for the pennant. On August 24 they were 7 1/2 games out of first place. But they reeled off 15 wins in a row from August 25th to the first game of a September 6th doubleheader to get back in the race. The streak also included 12 straight road wins, which was the franchise record until the 2013 Los Angeles Dodgers won 13 in a row in July and August.
The Robins were tied for first place on September 4th and September 22nd, but they never managed to pass the first-place New York Giants. On September 23rd, the young Chicago Cubs played spoilers by defeating the Robins 5-4 in 10 innings on a “bounce” home run by 23-year-old catcher Gabby Hartnett. (The NL did not introduce the ground-rule double until 1931.) The Robins were not able to recover and they finished 1 1/2 games behind the Giants. Brooklyn fans had to wait until 1941 for their team to win another pennant.
