The 1888 Washington Nationals set an all-time record with a team batting average of .208, the lowest ever recorded in major league history, tied with the 1884 Detroit Wolverines. However, the Nationals are considered the record holders as they accomplished their feat in 136 games, whereas the Wolverines only played 114 contests.
