Biographical Information[edit]
Ángel Alicea has pitched in the minors and for the Puerto Rican national team
He hit .345/.426/.527 in junior college in 2015, driving in 39 runs in 50 games and pitching briefly (1-1 in 5 IP). [1] Transferring to Alabama State, he was only 3 for 16 but pitched more and better (3-0, 2 Sv, 1.47). [2] It was well enough, in fact, to draw the interest of the Toronto Blue Jays. They took him in the 20th round of the 2016 amateur draft, one pick before Anthony Bender. The scout was Don Norris. [3]
Alicea was 2-1 with four saves and a 2.76 ERA for the 2016 Bluefield Blue Jays, fanning 45 in 32 2/3 IP. In the winter, he had a 2.79 ERA in 11 games for the Indios de Mayagüez. He pitched briefly in 2017, for the GCL Blue Jays (1-1, 4 R in 3 2/3 IP) and Vancouver Canadians (2 R in 4 IP). He only pitched four games for the Indios that winter, going 1-0 with a 3.68 ERA. He pitched for Puerto Rico in the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games, allowing one run in 1 1/3 IP and also pinch-running once and scoring a run for the Gold Medal winners. It was Puerto Rico's first Central American and Caribbean Games Gold in 16 years. [4] He was 1-0 with a 3.65 ERA in 11 games for the 2018-2019 Indios and has not pitched in 2020 or 2021, so his career may be over.
