Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Zachary Bird was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 9th round of the 2012 amateur draft. The scout was Matt Paul. He pitched in the Dodgers organization from 2012 to 2015, never posting an ERA below 4.25. Ironically, this was achieved in 2014 with the Great Lakes Loons of the Midwest League in what was otherwise far from a successful season, as his record was 6-17 in 26 games. He led the MWL in losses (3 ahead of Dace Kime), led Dodgers farmhands (3 more than Justin Germano) and tied Tyler Viza for the most defeats in the minor leaggues.

On July 30, 2015, he was traded to the Atlanta Braves along with injured P Paco Rodriguez and Cuban signee Héctor Olivera Jr., who was also injured at the time, in return for four pitchers, Bronson Arroyo, Luis Avilan, Jim Johnson and Alex Wood, and IF Jose Peraza. Arroyo was also injured at the time, and other considerations, such as who would be responsible for large amounts of salary owed to the various injured players played a major part in shaping the trade. For his part, Zachary was not the typical blue chip prospect usually included in a deal at the trading deadline, but more of a long shot stab in the dark, given his lack of significant success thus far in his professional career.
