Biographical Information[edit]

Yusniel Padrón-Artiles has pitched as high as AA and has been on the Cuban national team.

He had a 1.69 ERA for Cuba in the 2015 U-18 Baseball World Cup. [1] It is unclear when he came to the US. After pitching in junior college at Miami Dade (winning Conference Pitcher of the Year) [2], the Boston Red Sox took him in the 22nd round of the 2018 amateur draft (one round before Ryan Fernandez) and signed him for a $75,000 bonus. The scout was Willie Romay. [3]

Padrón-Artiles was 3-1 with a 3.74 ERA for the 2018 GCL Red Sox. In 2019, he was 7-1 with a 2.67 ERA for the Lowell Spinners and 0-2 with a 5.25 ERA for the Greenville Drive; he struck out 109 and walked 21 in 88 innings. He tied Anderson Munoz for the New York-Penn League lead in wins and also led in strikeouts (84), 3 ahead of Jacob Schlesener. In the playoffs, he struck out 14 and allowed one hit in six shutout innings. According to the Red Sox Media Guide, his 12 straight strikeouts that game are believed to have tied the record for either a major or minor league game; Luis Ramirez had done it in 2004.

After the 2020 minor league season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he was 3-7 with a 5.60 ERA for the 2021 Drive, striking out 104 in 90 innings. In '22, he struggled for Greenville (3-12, 5.95; he did fan 115 in 107 1/3) and the Portland Sea Dogs (9.58 ERA in 3 G). He tied Michael Cuevas for second in the South Atlantic League in losses and missed the top 10 in K by 3, behind Mason Montgomery. He tied Wikelman Gonzalez for 9th in the Red Sox chain in Ks but also tied for the most losses. In the 2023 Caribbean Series, he was allowed one run in one inning for the Federales de Chiriquí, losing to the WildCats KJ74 and Témesh Lourens.

In 2024, he was 5-1 with a save and a 5.53 ERA for the independent Les Capitales de Québec. He then suited up for Cuba in the 2024 Premier 12, appearing in three of their five games. Against South Korea, he relieved NPB star Liván Moinelo in the third with a 6-0 deficit and did a far better job, allowing one run in three; he had a 1-2-3 third against Dong-won Park (1B), Seung-yeup Na (DP) and Bo-gyeong Moon (K). Pavel Hernández took over in the 6th. He faced one batter in the game versus Japan, retiring Shota Morishita on a sac fly. His last game came against champion Taiwan. He replaced Yoennis Yera in the 5th with a 2-0 deficit and worked two scoreless frames (3 H, 4 K) before Yankiel Mauris came in. He was 4th on the team with 6 K, between Moinelo and Leodán Reyes, and tied for the most appearances. [4]
