Biographical Information[edit]

Yi-Lei Sun has played for the Taiwanese national team.

Sun represented Taiwan in the 2017 U-12 Baseball World Cup [1] and 2022 U-18 Baseball World Cup (hitting .292/.346/.375 as a DH/RF and allowing one run in three innings against Australia) [2] In the 2023 U-18 Baseball World Cup, he struck out 8 in a two-hitter to beat Adam Bates and Australia and saved Jun-Wei Zhang's win over the USA but lost to Japan in the Gold Medal Game. He finished with a 0.50 ERA. He tied for third in appearances (4), tied Maxwell Cornelissen for 5th in IP (14) and tied Jun-seo Hwang and Ibrahim Gonzalez for second in K (15). [3] The Nippon Ham Fighters signed him with a 75-million-yen signing bonus after the event.

The Taipei native then made it onto Taiwan's roster for the 2023 Asian Championship. He relieved Jo-Hsi Hsu in the 8th inning against South Korea, struck out Hyeon-seung Jung, gave up a single to Min-jun Lee then forced Sung-woo Kim to ground into a double play. He continued his pitching, and retired Jun-jae Jeong and Ju-chan Park after Jun-young Jeong hit a double. Sun struck out Seung-yeop Na to close the door. He then relieved Shao-En Lin against Japan, and he pitched 2 shutout innings despite allowing 3 hits. Taiwan was beaten by Japan and won Silver in the event.[4]
