Yasiel Balaguert played for the Cuban Junior National Team at the 2010 World Junior Championship. He hit just .200/.300/.240 in a starting role for the Bronze Medalists. He struck out in 9 of 25 at-bats and had one error in nine chances in the outfield.
In 2010, he left Cuba to come to the USA to try out for the Big Leagues. He is training in Miami. He was signed by the Chicago Cubs on December 7, 2011 by scouts Louie Eljaua and Jose Serra.
