Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Willie Smith was briefly in the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals in April and May of 1994. In 8 games, all in relief, he went 1-1 with an ERA of 9.00 in 7 innings.

He had originally signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates as an undrafted free agent before the 1986 season, then was in the New York Yankees organization in 1990 and 1991 and with the Cleveland Indians in 1992. On December 4, 1990, he was traded by the Pirates to the Yankees along with pitcher Jeff Robinson in return for C Don Slaught. He first reached AAA with the Columbus Clippers in 1990, when he went 3-1, 6.23 in 33 games. While he did not pitch all that well with St. Louis in 1994, he had an excellent season with their AAA affiliate, the Louisville Redbirds, going 2-3, 2.31 with 29 saves in 44 games.

He pitched in the Chinese Professional Baseball League with the Uni-President Lions in 1998.
