William L. Grayson Stadium
William L. Grayson Stadium in Savannah, GA, was the home of Savannah affiliated baseball from 1941 through 2015. After that, the Savannah Sand Gnats of the South Atlantic League moved into a new stadium in Columbia, SC, as the Columbia Fireflies.
Municipal Stadium opened on the same site in 1926, but a 1940 hurricane left just two sections of bleachers standing. City Council named the rebuilt ballpark for the Georgia National Guard General, Spanish-American War veteran and national Fraternal Order of Eagles president who led it. World War II suspended construction, and Grayson died before it resumed; some brickwork sat unfinished for 70 years. With its neighborhood, it joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.
Grayson and Municipal before it hosted an annual Thanksgiving Day game from 1927 through 1959 between Savannah High School and Benedictine Academy. Savannah professional baseball dated to 1904, continuously since 1968. Late in the 1962 season, racial tensions drove the last previous franchise to Lynchburg, VA.
