Biographical Information[edit]

Wen-Hua Sung played in the minor leagues and the CPBL. His cousins are NPB pitcher Chia-Hao Sung, CPBL pitcher Chia-Hsiang Lee and minor league pitcher Chen-Hsun Lee

Sung represented Taiwan in the 2011 World Youth Championship and 2013 U-18 Baseball World Cup (going 0-1 with a save and a 1.59 ERA). The San Diego Padres signed him on July 4, 2016 (the scout was Po-Hsuan Keng), and he received a $675,000 signing bonus. After missing the 2017 season, Sung debuted with Tri-City Dust Devils in 2018. However, he struggled there as his ERA was 10.80 in 21 appearances. He improved to a 3.05 ERA in 21 games in 2019, and he missed the 2020 season as the coronavirus shut down the minor leagues. The 25-year-old Sung recorded a 2.52 ERA in 23 games in 2021 for the Fort Wayne TinCaps in 2021, and he pitched 7 games with a 2.35 ERA in 2022. He also had a 1.50 ERA in 11 games with the AAA El Paso Chihuahuas.

The Padres released Sung on June 21, and he came back to his hometown Taiwan. He was selected by the Uni-President Lions in the fourth round of the 2022 CPBL Draft, and he had a solid 0.84 ERA in 4 games (2 starts) in 2022. However, he suffered from a serious right shoulder injury in 2023, and he missed the entire season.

Sung's repertoire includes a fastball (peak 95 mph), slider, cutter, curveball and forkball.
