Washington Pilots

The Washington Pilots were briefly members of the 1932 East-West League, posting a 16-35 record. Managed originally by 2B Frank Warfield (.247), the team boasted several prominent names in black baseball history including 1B Mule Suttles (.322), Sammy T. Hughes and Rap Dixon. Chet Brewer (2-6), Webster McDonald (2-7), Leroy Matlock (2-5) and Nip Winters (1-2) all had poor seasons on the hill in otherwise fine careers. Warfield died of a stroke in a hotel in Washington, DC that year at age 37 and McDonald became the manager in his stead. The team, like the league, did not survive much longer.
