Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder Walton Cruise played ten seasons in the majors, split between the St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Braves.

Walton broke in during the 1914 season with the Cards, seeing his lone regular action in 1917. Playing 153 games, he batted .295/.343/.399 while scoring 70 runs; his five home runs and 59 RBI were second on the team to the great Rogers Hornsby. Against his future mates, the Braves, he hit the first ball out of Braves Field. The second man to do so would be... Walt Cruise, now a Brave in 1921. In 1918, even in limited action (70 games), his six home runs were second best in the NL.

During the 1919 season, Cruise was sold to Boston. He took part in the famed 26-inning duel to a tie between Leon Cadore and Joe Oeschger in 1920, then enjoyed his best season a year later. In 108 games, he was fourth in the NL in batting average, second in OBP and sixth in slugging percentage, batting .346/.429/.503 with eight home runs and 55 RBI. He played his final game in 1924, finishing with a career line of .277/.348/.386 and having played all of the outfield positions with some regularity: 317 games in left, 153 in center and 205 in right field.
