Biographical Information[edit]

Walt Goldsby Nashville Americans 1886.jpg

Outfielder Walt Goldsby spent three seasons in the majors.

He was born on the last day of the year in 1861 in Marion, LA, near the Arkansas border. All of the early major leaguers from Louisiana came from New Orleans, LA, except for Walt.

He managed the Topeka Golden Giants to the championship of the Western League in 1887. He also served part of 1888 with Birmingham as a manager and part of the 1889 season as manager of the Evansville Hoosiers, who finished 5th in the Central Interstate League.

For a time he served as a minor league umpire and he also umpired one game in the American Association in 1888. He also worked on the railroad for some time. He killed himself in 1914 after suffering from unbearable joint pain, likely caused as a result of being hit in the head with a pitch and knocked unconscious during a game against the Philadelphia Athletics years earlier.

Sporting Life of January 24, 1914 carried news of his suicide, and mentioned that he had managed a number of minor league teams.
