Biographical information[edit]

Walker Weickel was a 2012 supplemental first-round pick.

He starred for the US junior national team in 2011, going 3-0 with a 0.46 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 19 2/3 IP. He led the team in whiffs and tied for the most wins. The US won the Pan American junior title. As a senior in high school, he was 12-1 with a 1.22 ERA. In 66 innings, he fanned 87 while allowing 27 hits and 25 walks. He was a Aflac All-American as well. He was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the supplemental first round of the 2012 Amateur Draft. He was selected 55th overall; the pick was compensation for not signing 2011 first-rounder Brett Austin. Weickel was the last of four Padres first-rounders that year, after Max Fried, Zach Eflin and Travis Jankowski. All but Jankowski were high school pitchers. The scout was Willie Bosque.
