W.S. Wyckoff
William S. Wyckoff
Biographical Information[edit]
W.S. Wyckoff umpired one National League game in 1892. He had been working in the Eastern League previously [1]. His one game was on July 25th, but his work did not receive rave reviews. According to the next day's Rochester Democrat and Chronicle:
"Umpire Wyckoff made his debut as an umpire to-day and he spoiled what would have been a good game at the Polo Grounds. Cleveland's victory was largely due to his wretched work. His decisions on balls and strikes were good, but his decisions on the bases were horrible."
Three days later, the Brooklyn Citizen added:
"... Umpire Wyckoff, who did so poorly on Monday, again failed to show up....."
So that was the end of his major league umpiring career. It is not clear whether or not he was related to Wheeler Wyckoff, the second president of the American Association.
