Biographical Information[edit]
Verne Clemons was a catcher in the major leagues for seven seasons, all with St. Louis teams. He broke in with the St. Louis Browns in 1916 for four games, but spent the rest of his major league career with the 1919-1924 St. Louis Cardinals in the days of Rogers Hornsby. Clemons was a solid hitter, usually besting his team averages. A semi-regular in two seasons, Verne batted .320/.380/.396 in 117 games in 1921 before tapering off the rest of his big league days. Clemons is remembered in the book "Stand and Deliver" A History of Pinch-Hitting", as a solid pinch-hitter who went 15-for-54. He often caught pitcher Bill Doak.
He was in the US Navy in 1918, and played baseball for the Great Lakes Naval Training Station that year.
