Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Valente Bellozo had a very solid major league debut for the Miami Marlins on June 26, 2024. Starting against the Kansas City Royals, he pitched five scoreless innings allowing just two hits and no walks and striking out a pair. He left with a 1-0 lead, but his bullpen blew hit, surrendering five runs in the 8th and the Marlins lost the game.

He was originally signed by the Houston Astros as an international amateur free agent from Mexico on July 3, 2017, and began his pro career the next year with the DSL Astros. He did very well with the Tri-City ValleyCats in the New York-Penn League the next year, going 6-0, 1.39 in 11 games, but the COVID-19 pandemic and injuries in 2022 set him back. In 2023, he went 3-3, 6.18 for the Asheville Tourists of the South Atlantic League, but pitched much better in AA with the Corpus Christi Hooks where his record was 0-1, 1.72 in 4 games. On April 4, 2024, he was acquired by Miami in a trade for infielder Jacob Amaya. He started the year in AA with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos of the Southern League, going 2-2, 4.60 in 6 starts before being promoted to AAA for the first time of his career on May 21st. He made another 5 appearances there, going 1-2, 5.66, before getting the call to Miami. Given his spotty record as a pro until then, his brilliant performance in his debut was a pleasant surprise.
