could you hold off on the images until we research a little more the copyright issues. I'm a bit worried that Topps is going to come back and say we can't use them. We might want to research how wikipedia handles these issues.

Sean, I have a lot of experience with this question as I used to run a baseball card website and had my lawyer check it out. You are protected by the first amendment as long as it's used to inform and educate - which this site certainly does. Magazines, such as Beckett, Tuff Stuff, and other card magazines pay no fees to use the photos. Use of card photos fall under fair use just as long as you don't crop the photos from the cards and just use the pictures (with no card borders). I've talked to reps from the card companies and the only thing they get a little upset about is when someone reproduces a card as a t-shirt, mug, plate, or other commercial item. I'll hold off posting anymore until you give the go ahead but I can assure you that the site has the right to post them. -- Andy

I thought fair use also included giving proper credit for materials used in such a fashion?

I am here because I noticed the baseball card image for Vic Aldridge, and would like more information about the card shown. I was only aware of 2 or 3 "tobacco" cards from long ago, and not of any more recent sets. It would. One would have to make certain that the files are optimized for speed. I get about a terabyte/month with the current package. I'm not sure if it would surpass that or not.

I'm trying to keep the files as small as possible and all are jpg's, if anyone has some tips on optimizing the files beyond that PLMK. -- Andy

If you're using a program like Photoshop, you can try fiddling with the compression quality. Small images for the web can tolerate relatively high compression ratios. If you have a ton of images, you can use something like Image Magick to batch compress them. --Roger 15:20, 24 Jan 2006 (EST)

What size pictures are you using?[edit]

What are the dimensions, in pixels, of the card images? I think I'm ready to scan in some of my Play Ball cards from '39 and '40. --Scott 12:15, 20 Dec 2005 (EST)

Height is about 175 pixels for cards that show a good headshot, 225 for those that are more action oriented. -- Andy
