A right-handed pitcher at the University of Tennessee, Allen was named MVP of the Knoxville regional during the 2001 College World Series. He had good velocity on his fastball for the duration of his career, but also struggled with command. Allen walked 225 batters over the course of 443.0 minor league innings. He finished his career in the minors with a 19-28 record, a 4.33 ERA, and 319 strikeouts.
