Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Tyler Ferguson was already 30 years old and a veteran of eight professional campaigns - not counting the year spent on the sidelines when the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the minor leagues - when he made his major league debut with the Oakland Athletics against the Texas Rangers on May 7, 2024. That day, he pitched the final two innings of a 15-8 loss, giving up a hit and two walks but no runs as most of the damage had been done against starter Ross Stripling in the first two innings, when Texas scored 11 times to basically put the game away.

He spent three seasons at Vanderbilt University between 2013 and 2015 and was taken in the 6th round of the 2015 amateur draft by the Texas Rangers, after having been selected in the 40th round of the 2012 amateur draft coming out of a high school. He had appeared in both the 2014 and 2015 College World Series with the Commodores, where he was a teammate of Walker Buehler and Dansby Swanson among others, and given the school's growing reputation for developing future major league pitchers, it looked like he would be pitching in the Show in no time. Obviously, his career took a different turn after being signed by scout Jay Heafner of the Rangers.

He pitched in the Rangers system from 2015 to 2018 but never made it past Class A and used exclusively as a reliever, never winning more than two games in any one season or saving more than three. After being let go by the Rangers, he spent the 2019 season in the independent Can-Am Association with the Aigles de Trois-Rivières, going 3-5, 4.75 in 45 games, then sat out 2020. A less dedicated person would have called it quits at that point, but he resumed his career in 2021 with the Chicago Dogs of the American Association and after pitching well there (1-0, 3.14 in 9 games), was signed by the Atlanta Braves and had his best year yet, going 6-4, 2.23 in 22 games and making it to AA with the Mississippi Braves by the end of the season. In 2022, he moved to AAA mid-season after starting the year at Mississippi, but whereas his ERA was 3.69 in 32 games in the Southern League, it shot up to 6.63 in 20 games for the Gwinnett Stripers. He moved to the San Diego Padres in 2023, spending the year with the AAA Reno Aces but was just 5-2, 5.49 in 51 games, including his first 3 starts since college. He moved to the Athletics in 2024 and was 1-1, 2.40 in 14 games for the Las Vegas Aviators when he was called up to Oakland.
