Biographical Information

Outfielder Troy Gustafson played in the San Francisco Giants system in 2000 and 2001. Drafted in the 27th round of the 1999 amateur draft (one pick before infielder Mark Kiger), he split the 2000 campaign between the AZL Giants (.267/.360/.302 in 49 games) and the San Jose Giants (1 for 5, BB in three games), hitting .266 with no home runs, 13 RBI and 21 stolen bases (caught only 4 times) in 52 total matches. Showing a good eye at the plate, he walked 21 times to only 20 strikeouts, posting a .360 on-base percentage. He was third in the Arizona League in steals behind Chris Amador and Bo Ivy.

In 2001, he hit .279 with no home runs, 22 RBI and 10 stolen bases in 56 games for the AZL Giants. His on-base percentage dropped to .316 as he walked only eight times in 222 at-bats. He struck out 28 times and was caught stealing six times, with a much worse stealing percentage than the prior year. He did field .989 with 6 assists to 1 error.

Overall, Gustafson hit .273/.336/.328 with no home runs, 35 RBI, 54 runs scored and 31 stolen bases in 41 tries in 108 games.

He is a rarity, in that he is one of only a few ballplayers born in the Middle East.
