The brother of Jerrod Wong, first baseman Travis Wong was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 13th round of the 1999 amateur draft but did not sign. Later that year, he was a member of Team USA at the World Junior Championship, held in Taiwan. After attending Texas A&M University, he was again drafted by the Reds, this time in the 48th round of the 2002 amateur draft. He made his pro debut that summer, hitting .317 for the GCL Reds while leading the Gulf Coast League with 10 home runs. However, he hit just .189 in 80 games between three clubs the next year, his final season in pro ball.
